Fed: Whitlams to be given life membership of ALP

Former Prime Minister GOUGH WHITLAM and his wife MARGARET will become the first national
lifetime members of the ALP today .. with a special presentation at the Labor national
conference.

Opposition Leader KEVIN RUDD will present the former prime minister and his wife with
medallions .. and a plaque before the conference begins its debate on industrial relations.

Labor has several life members at a state level but the Whitlams will be the first
to be given national life membership.

The presentations take place before the conference's 400 delegates begin debating Mr
RUDD's proposed new industrial relations policy .. which would ban strike pay .. and outlaw
strikes unless workers were given a secret ballot beforehand.
